Review Summary: Reliably unreliable
Review: The only thing you can count on with LaCie drives is that they will fail within a year. Save yourself the money and the headache (I lost two within twelve months of very light use).

Review Summary: form and function in a hard drive.
Review: LaCie external hard drives are some of the best designed drives on the market. I've purchased a number of drives over the years including Seagate, Western Digital, Simple and LaCie. I have always liked the form factor of the LaCie drives best. They are very clean in their design, which means they are less obtrusive on your desk and easy to stack or stand.
This drive is very quiet, and although it does become warm, it is not hot by any means. The case is solid and they appear to be very well made. They are reliable and the price is reasonable, especially for the 2 terabyte model. The triple interface gives a lot of flexibility. Hard drives are mechanical, and by definition can break down. These LaCie drives are probably as dependable as they come. But make sure to always back up to more than one drive.

Review Summary: One out of two power converters died in less than a year
Review: I bought two of these 1 TB units less than a year ago. The "good" one used most often (mostly for occasionally editing video and music) works fine. The external power converter for the other (used for long-term storage) died in less than a year. The power converter was on for months, but the drive was powered off.
When I tried to use the "dead" 1TB drive on an iMac and a PC, it clicked and would not show itself. I could still route other FireWire 800 devices through it. It acted just like the hard drive had died. I tried the FireWire 400 and USB ports on it, but no joy. It just clicked. But when I swapped power converters, the "dead" 1TB unit worked fine and the "good" 1 TB unit acted dead. So it is just a bad power converter. The short lifeo s the power converter is the reason for four stars, not five. I assume that it will be easy to replace.
Moral of the story: if you think that your external drive is dead, check the power unit before dumping the drive.
Other than that, using the FireWire 800 port, the drives are fast enough to edit video in Final Cut Pro on an iMac. The drive is also good for editing music. Chaining three drive on the FW800 ports works well, all are fast.

Review Summary: I would recommend against this one
Review: I purchased this drive about 9 months ago and used it primarily for storing video. I had it hooked up on a 24in iMac via firewire 800. Blah blah same horror story, drive breaks etc... Long story short, I sent it in to get fixed while under warranty. I got it back and they had done absolutely nothing to it. It still would not mount, made the horrible buzzing noise and showed less than half capacity. This was 7 days ago. I'm still waiting to see if they will replace (not repair) the drive for me.
Now I can't say that my experience with the drive is indicative of the product at large. It is possible that I had one of the few defective ones. However, I think that my experience with LaCie's support team speaks to their incompetence. How could a repair center possibly forget to REPAIR the drive?? I literally believe they never touched the thing. If you have multiple external drives like I do then you know that eventually you are going to have problems with one of them. Its just nice to know that you have somene who can fix the problem. In this case I have nowhere to turn for that kind of help. LaCie, stay away from 'em...

Review Summary: Pleased so far
Review: I have been a pretty devoted fan of Western Digital MyBook hard drives. However, I wanted a large drive to use for Time Machine that had firewire 800, and the Lacie beat the MyBook's in price and specs for my needs. I am glad I went with this drive - it has been great so far. Performance is as expected on FW800 - very fast! It is a bit large, but overall pretty slick looking drive as well.
Only complaint would be that the fan seems to make some noise at times. If I tap the case when it is doing it, it will usually stop - but a bit annoying none the less. Could just be mine though - I cannot imagine they all do this.
